Since when have the International Weeks against Racism existed?

International Weeks Against Racism: Together for Diversity and Respect

Every year in March, the International Weeks Against Racism (IWgR) take place, a global action that stands against discrimination, exclusion, and hate. The initiative dates back to the United Nations and commemorates 21 March 1960, when 69 peaceful demonstrators were shot by the police in Sharpeville (South Africa). This day was later declared by the UN as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Why are the International Weeks against Racism so important?

Racism is not a relic of the past, but still a serious problem – in Europe and worldwide. People are disadvantaged, insulted, or even become victims of violence because of their origin, skin colour, or religion.

Educate and raise awareness: Convey knowledge about racism and its effects.

• Show solidarity: Empower those affected and give them a voice.
• Promote social cohesion: Bring together people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Actions and events

During the action weeks, cities, schools, clubs, and initiatives organise numerous events:

• Panel discussions and workshops to raise awareness about racism and discrimination.
• Commemorative events to remember the victims of racist violence.
• Cultural events such as film screenings, readings, and concerts to promote intercultural exchange.
• Social media campaigns to spread messages against racism.

What can each individual do?

Everyone can contribute to the fight against racism – not just during the action weeks, but every day:

• Listen and intervene: Do not ignore racist statements or actions, but clearly oppose them.
• Educate yourself: Consume books, articles, and documentaries about racism.
• Show solidarity: Support those affected and listen to them.
• Get involved: Actively support organisations and projects against racism.

In summary, one can say:

International Weeks Against Racism are an important reminder that a just and open society is not a given – it requires the commitment of us all. It is not enough to be against racism; we must actively combat it. For only together can we create a world where diversity is valued and every person is treated with respect.
