Since the 3rd century BC, the city has evolved from the Celtic settlement of 'Lutetia' on the Île de la Cité into a significant center. Under the rule of Francis I in the 16th century, Paris experienced a golden age of art and culture. Later, in the 17th century, under Louis XIV, the city was expanded with magnificent baroque buildings and impressive boulevards. The French Revolution of 1789 gave this beautiful city a world-historical significance and profoundly shaped the city. The industrialization in the 19th century led to tremendous population growth and made Paris a symbol of progress and modernity.
